Aerobic Respiration Lecture Materials

These are the Aerobic Respiration Lecture materials of the Virtual Cell Biology Classroom. The resources below are used to supplement an actual college cell biology course. Anyone taking, teaching or interested in biology may find these materials helpful and is welcome to use them.

The Aerobic Respiration Lecture materials include:

  • a list of learning objectives
  • a PowerPoint lecture
  • a homework assignment
  • "class note" articles
  • practice test questions
  • review questions
  • term paper metabolism assignment
  • links to additional educational resources

AEROBIC RESPIRATION LECTURE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
These lecture learning objectives are  a study guide based on the VCBC Aerobic Respiration Lecture PowerPoint:

  • Understand difference between catabolism and anabolism, and what these reactions have to do with metabolism.
  • Understand what a redox reaction is and what this type of reaction has to do with metabolism.
  • What is ATP, and what is its significance in metabolism.
  • What is phosphorylation?
  • Understand the steps of aerobic cellular respiration, with respect to the four sub-pathways (glycolysis, synthesis of Acetyl-CoA, Kreb's Cycle & the electron transport chain). For each sub-pathway, what is the starting molecule, end product molecule, and what energy is extracted?
  • What is oxygen's role in aerobic cellular respiration?
  • Where does metabolic energy originate? How is it captured? What organelles and pigments are involved?

AEROBIC RESPIRATION LECTURE POWERPOINT
All of the lecture PowerPoints used in the Virtual Cell Biology Classroom have fill-in-the-blanks on many of the slides to encourage students to pay attention and follow along during the presentation. Instructors, contact us for the information that goes in the blanks.

HELPFUL TIPS: Some of the PowerPoint presentations are large files and may take a few moments to download, depending on the speed of your internet connection. If you are printing a hard copy of the PowerPoint, you can save paper by selecting Handouts (rather than Slides) in the "Print What:" drop down menu of the PPT print screen. Then you can choose the number of slides you want to have on each printed page. If the printed PPT presentation is to be used as student notes, it is best to choose handouts with 2 or 3 slides per page.

AEROBIC RESPIRATION HOMEWORK
Word document of a single essay question given to students at the end of lecture. This tool helps the students review the main messages of the lecture while allowing the instructor to assess the class' understanding of the material.

AEROBIC RESPIRATION CLASS NOTES
Here are brief summaries of some of the various subtopics and concepts introduced in this lecture, kind of like really good class notes.

AEROBIC RESPIRATION PRACTICE TEST QUESTIONS Part I & Part II
Practice test questions designed to help you better understand the material from this lecture. They are based on information in the Metabolism: Aerobic Respiration PowerPoint Lecture.

AEROBIC RESPIRATION REVIEW QUESTIONS
Questions designed to help you review the material in the Aerobic Respiration Lecture.

METABOLISM PROJECT PAPER
Word document instructions for writing a paper on the relationship between metabolism and nutrition. Allows students to choose one of three options. The Calorie King website has a food database to help you with finding grams of carbohydrates, fiber, protein & fats of common food items, for Option 1 of this project.
